Fire Safety: Know The Plan

London Fire Brigade is launching a year-long campaign, after a survey found wide-spread confusion among residents about what to do if there is a blaze in their purpose-built block or maisonette.

Half of 715 Londoners living in purpose-built flat blocks, polled by YouGov in November for LFB, said they would get out if there was a fire outside their flat but in the building. This can be the most dangerous thing to do, according to the LFB.

The YouGov survey found that, while 71 per cent of people would get out if there was a fire in their own flat, 24 per cent would stay inside to call 999. Only 40 per cent had an escape plan in the event of a fire.

The ‘Know the Plan’ campaign and website aims to tackle the confusion. The website is designed to support tenants and landlords, having a series of FAQs, advice and guidance for fire safety in purpose built blocks of flats.

You can also download EastendHomes’ Fire Safety Leaflet by downloading it free from our website or by collecting one from your local Housing Centre.

EastendHomes Housing Officers will be running Fire Safety Awareness Days in the foyer or lobby of the following blocks over June and July. Housing officers will be available in the specified blocks to talk to residents about how they should react in the event of a fire. The safety days will cover all blocks which are high rise or of complex design. In some properties, your designated escape route may take you through a neighbouring property. Wherever you live you should have a plan to escape in the event of a fire in your property. If you are worried or have specific concerns, please arrange to speak to your housing offficer.
