Photo of Tom Madden at community event Former EastendHomes (EeH) Board member Tom Madden has sadly passed away after a short illness.

Well known for many years as a formidable campaigner on behalf of tenants, particularly on the Isle of Dogs, Tom was instrumental in helping to create EeH as a community-based housing association. During the Housing Choice consultation in 2004/5 it was Tom's combative and unique style of campaigning that was decisive in achieving a positive and successful outcome to the resident engagement and ballot exercise.

Following the transfer of the Island Gardens estates in 2006 Tom served as a Board member of EeH for almost 10 years, during which time he worked tirelessly on behalf of the organisation whilst continuing to represent the residents of the estates on the Island and serving as chair of the West Ferry Tenants and Residents Association.

Tom's work and achievements were recognised in 2019 with a Civic Award by Tower Hamlets Council and later in the year by the national Housing Heroes award from the Chartered Institute of Housing. Unfortunately due to ill health Tom was unable to travel to Manchester to accept the award but he was immensely proud of it and the recognition it brought for many years of hard work and advocacy on behalf of residents in the east end.

Tom’s expectation that tenants should receive not just good but high quality services from their landlord has meant that many local residents, especially those living on the West ferry estate, can enjoy the community and environment he helped to create over many years.

He will be sadly missed not only by everyone at EeH but by friends, neighbours and everyone who knew him in Tower Hamlets.
