Tower Hamlets Council announce end to waste service strike

On the evening of Tuesday 26 September Tower Hamlets Council announced it had reached a deal with the Unite Union to end the waste service strike early. Refuse workers and street cleaners returned to work on Wednesday 27 September.

For the next few weeks, they will be joined by private waste contractors employed by the council to catch up on missed collections and street cleaning as quickly as possible. You can read the full announcement here.

This is much welcomed news for anyone who lives and works in Tower Hamlets. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank EastendHomes housing and estate staff who sprang into action with an immediate plan when the strike was announced earlier in September.

While we appreciate this has been a challenging time, we have been struck by the numerous compliments we've received from residents praising our staff for their hard work to keep EastendHomes' estates clean.

John Henderson, Managing Director said:

We’d particularly like to pay tribute to our caretakers who have gone above and beyond throughout the strike, working closely with resident and private contractors to minimise disruption and keep on top of things. Thanks to all those residents who have got in touch to express their gratitude – it means a lot to us and the team.

EastendHomes will continue to provide additional support while the backlogs of rubbish across Tower Hamlets are cleared.
